Crime
Many model citizens believed that alcohol was a strongly rooted to problems such as crime, poverty, violence, and health issues.
Really these problems were not even half as horrific as they became once the Prohibition Era started. Crime rates grew higher in South Carolina as more states grew to become “dry states”, dry states were when a state made the transportation, selling, and manufacturing of intoxicating liquors illegal.
Once a state became dry state citizens went to extremes to get their hands on alcohol by going to Bootleggers and resorting to Moonshining. Bootleggers and Moonshiners sprung up all over the nation, not only was this illegal itself, but it brought more and more average citizens to regularly partaking in these crimes.
Bootleggers were popular in South Carolina especially, because it is coastline state and Bootleggers were able to smuggle in alcohols from other countries. The crime rates increase during the Prohibition Era was significant because many thought the Prohibition would lower the rates of crimes, but instead it didn’t; it only causing more trouble for America.

Health
The Prohibition had an extremely negative impact in South Carolina by bringing danger to peoples’ health. The danger to
peoples’ health was connected to the issues in crime and poverty in many ways. First of all, as you know people were going to extreme extents to satisfy the hunger for alcohols; one of ways they achieved their satisfaction was by depending on Moonshining.
Moonshining was dangerous because it was unprofessional people making their own alcoholic beverages, causing them to come out with stronger and deadly beverages.
Another substitute to this craving was using industrial alcohol that was put into things like paint or toothpastes; industrial alcohols were just plain poisonous, but no one cared they just wanted to tame the crave. People could remove the poison, but it was said to taste repulsive. Many people sold industrial alcohol claiming the poisons were removed only to discover they weren’t once consumed. Even when citizens purchased smuggled alcohol from Bootleggers they had to hide them in some place. The liquors hidden in metal tins were extremely dangerous from the chemical interaction of alcohol with the metal producing a deadly toxin.

Economy
Prohibition had and extremely negative impact in South Carolina by bringing poverty. Just like the situation with the crime increase; poverty was suspected to be rooted to intoxicating liquors.
So just like the crimes Americans put forth an effort to solve this problem; only making the problem increase. Alcohol companies producing liquors, beers, lagers, wine and etc. all were shut down during the Volstead Act leaving citizens suddenly jobless.. Some American’s sinking so low they went back to old ways of handling things… alcohol.
Going back to alcohol only turned gentlemen into criminals since alcohol was illegal. The government was also feeling the poverty effects during this era. The government could not tax alcohol; they could have used the extra money while constantly spending millions on the Volstead Act.
